The Difference Between Failure and Success Online Is..
Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that the only difference between success and failure online is EDUCATION.
When I first started selling ebooks on eBay and online I was in no way educated in Internet Marketing techniques, in fact I had never even heard of Internet Marketing to be honest.
I had never designed a website.
I had never designed graphics.
I had never written anything in my life, except at school many years before.
I didn’t know what a domain name was.
I didn’t know what web hosting was.
I had never used ftp.
I didn’t know what HTML was.
I had never wrote an article.
I didn’t know any SEO.
I didn’t understand keyword research.
I had never used an autoresponder.
I had never visited a forum.
I had never even read an eBook!
I could go on and on about all the things I didn’t know how to do but I won’t bore you.
I had literally never done anything online except send some personal emails, buy some bargains from eBay and play free online games.
The reason I am telling you how much I didn’t know, is just to show you that education can make all the difference.
If I can learn what I did and get to where I am now, you can do it too.
I know sometimes you feel like you will never learn everything you think you should know, but seriously YOU WILL, JUST GIVE IT TIME.
You will know from previous blogs I keep harping on about not finding success overnight, and you won’t, most marketers don’t, so don’t be too hard on yourself, give yourself some breathing space and be prepared to work at your online business success over time.
I guess my online ventures began when I realized people were making money online selling information products I was instantly hooked.
I thought to myself, what an easy way to make money, but boy was I wrong.
The nights I spent pulling out my hair I am surprised I have any hair left!
I used to get so frustrated online and sometimes I still do.
For example yesterday I was branding an ebook using a PDF Brander.
Now I used this software without any problems about 2 years ago, but as I had not used it since I had completely forgot how to use it. Just goes to show that the saying is true “if you don’t use it you lose it”.
Steam was literally coming out of my ears as I tried to get it to work.
I finally gave up, submitted a support request to the software site, then sat down with my newspaper and a drink.
After about a half an hour, when I had calmed down, I went back to my pc and re-read the instruction manual, done some changes to the ebook and BINGO it worked.
I suppose I seen submitting a support ticket as the easy way to do it, but as we all know, you don’t normally get an instant response from help desks so you are left twiddling your thumbs awaiting their reply.
Thankfully, after I re-read the instruction manual, I managed to work out my problem, to say I was relieved is an understatement, I hate not knowing how to do something, and I think that’s a good personal trait to have, I will not let anything beat me.
I don’t know about you, but I become a woman possessed when I cannot do something, I move heaven and earth to understand how I can overcome a problem and I don’t give up until I have conquered whatever I am trying to master.
Too many people give up at the first hurdle online, that’s why so many fail.
You have to educate yourself in any way you can.
If you search the internet you can almost always find a solution to your problem in various formats.
Many times you can actually get the information for free too.
Now, if you have the money, you could of course just by buy a $5000 product to help you out.
But being serious, you can’t really buy high end products every time you need a solution.
You can get lots of amazing content on the internet for free.
That’s the beauty of the internet, free information.
You can easily search google or yahoo for free content on any task you are struggling with this can give you access to:
Free reports.
Related forums.
Blogs.
Articles.
Free video tutorials and more.
When you don’t have a lot of money to spend educating yourself, then the only way is free information.
That’s exactly how I started out, dumb and poor!
I never had any spare cash to waste, all my money was accounted for, so my only option was the freebies.
Now we know that nothing in life is free there is normally a catch somewhere.
For free information you might need to part with your name and email address.
Your email address is a small price to pay for something you need, and at the end of the day you can always unsubscribe if you don’t like future follow up emails that are sent to you.
It’s important to realize that unfortunately there is not some Internet Marketing USB stick that you can insert into your brain and instantly download all the information you need to know immediately.
You are going to have to learn some “stuff”.
So in essence you are doing a swap, your email for a solution to a problem your having.
Someone has took the time to write or talk about your problem, and create a solution for you, so I think it’s a fair exchange.
But their solution may not be the one you want.
For example:
I remember when I wrote my very first ebook, I think the title was something like “How To Catch A Cheating Spouse”.
The ebook was my first attempt and I had used a personal experience to create it, I detailed all the various steps you can do to catch your cheating spouse.
When I accessed the free content, I was told I would need adobe photoshop, which cost a pretty penny and I couldn’t afford it.
Other free content told me about free imaging software that could help, so I downloaded it and tried it out.
7 days on and I had a basic design ecover that looked more like a dog’s dinner than a sleek ecover.
That’s what I mean buy the solution might not always be the solution you are looking for.
I needed to find out how to design an ecover, I designed an ecover, but the output was not what I had desired.
So I went back to google, searched for cheap ecover designers, I found one I liked, sent him $10 or so and within about 1 hour I had an ecover.
Now my ebook was ready to go, but I had wasted the best part of 2 weeks trying to get an ecover.
In my early days I was a “jack of all trades and master of none” and I don’t want you to make the same mistake.
I felt like every part of my business had to be done by ME, my website was like my baby and no one was touching it.
This was a very bad fault on my part.
You have to learn when to outsource parts of your business.
I learned an important lesson that day, that if I ever need graphics again, I would just pay a professional rather than spend hours trying to save some money and design them myself.
In fact, about an hour ago I paid a designer to create some graphics for my new website that will be coming out soon.
If you end up trying to do everything in your business yourself, you won’t get very far, you won’t have the time.
It’s simply too much for one person.
If you are chasing this dream lifestyle on the internet, when will you have time to reap the rewards?
Your time can be better spent when you let others help.
But how can you get other people to help you?
You need to build online relationships.
Now this might sound quite hard, but it’s really not.
You can easily build up friendships and relationships with other people in your market simply by visiting related forums.
Forums have a wealth of experience at your fingertips.
Remember earlier I said I submitted a support ticket and had to wait for a response?
Well in a forum you can submit a post and you will receive almost instant free help (depending on how many members the forum has) and not everyone on a forum is just out to make money, many forums members are just genuine people like you and I who want to help.
There are people in forums who are happy to help and these new connections can open up a whole new world for you and your business.
When you need help, find a relevant forum and make a post asking for help.
I have met so many nice people through forums and I actually consider them to be my friends now, we have been in contact so much and done so much to help out each others businesses.
If you need help and you cant find an answer from the “free stuff method” try forums.
Don’t be afraid to post in a forum, people won’t laugh or insult you if you ask a stupid question.
We were all newbies once upon a time, the Internet Marketing USB stick does not exist remember.
Don’t struggle along alone, join a forum and get help.
There are literally thousands of forums you can join, just search google for your niche forum, ie. blogging forum, traffic forum, website design forum etc.
Find some, sign up and get posting.
Another good idea is that many forums have a private messaging system, ideal for those amongst you who are too shy to make a post in front of all the forum members.
You simply send a private message to one of the members, and then they reply (if they want to).
Then you can ask them your question and see if they can help you out.
Now they may not have an answer, but more likely than not, they will say they don’t know but tell you another member on the forum who might now the answer.
Then you can contact them.
Any forum I have ever been on has always been friendly and helpful to me.
If you don’t know where to turn on the internet for help, you can’t find any information on it, find a related forum and ask in there.
You don’t have to learn everything yourself, it’s ok to ask for help, so find some forums and start building those online relationships.
Good luck, Sally

Hi Sally,
Great post, I think you hit it right on about giving up when people hit a hurdle.
The other thing I notice when people fail is the simply fact that they never put enough time to one particular product..after just a few weeks they are already ready to move to the next latest and greatest way to make money online.
Bottom line is if you give a product with good reviews at least three months of your time, should be no reason why you cant make a nice little income online.
Thanks for the great reading Sally,
Edson Buchanan
Hi Sally
What a helpful post! I was pleased to read that I’m not the only one to learn how to do something and then forget all I learnt a couple of years later.
I think I’ll just have to accept that relearning stuff is a necessary evil and there is no point moaning about it.
I’ll save a copy of your post to read more carefully later.
Thanks!

Sally,
Good information. I agree with you about ‘outsourcing’. For those of us who are Photoshop challenged, it is so much easier to find someone who can do a good job for you for a little cash. I have one of those…
As for websites, I have gone away from the minisite designs and am using a very basic template which I think converts better…but who knows.
In the long run, do what you are good at and let others do the rest.
By the way…nice gravatar up there
Keep up the good work.
Ron
Hey Sally,
Boy, I could not have said it better. I am in the position to teach this stuff, and am doing freely.
However, I wanted to share something. I have finally started our Music Video album Circles Round the Moon and I just barely got half of the first page done and I am already receiving major hits of people who really like it.
What is the problem you say? Well, my wife and I work jobs, I build the internet business (which is 1 step forward and 2 steps back), we have a band and now I am trying to share the good music on line and now I am afraid of trying to keep up with the fan response.
I know you know what I am talking about.
I do not want to get to a point where we don’t respond to the fans, but we need to work.
It just goes to show that you have to be careful of what you wish for.

Hi Sally,
To add to what you have said which is uncomfortably true for most newbies, I believe there are three things you need before you embark on internet marketing and they are patience, commitment and perseverance.
I completely agree education will make the difference. But, education should be one which can be applied successfully.
I completely agree with Edson when he says that you need to find a system and work with it till it produces the desired results.
Running after all the courses regularly put out by the gurus will not get you anywhere but may make you poorer and not necessarily wiser.
From your post, I see that you can be a good mentor for struggling newbies.
Hope to see more great posts.

Yet another great blog, you hit the nail on the head every time Sally.
All the free tools are out there like you say, you only have to search for them. Some of them are dam good, I do use a fair few free tools myself.
My motto has always been if you don’t ask you don’t get, so what you say about forums is so true.
My thought for today is :- Remember behind every internet marketing expert was once an internet newbie.

You could be describing my experiences exactly!
I get to the point where I am about to give up when I encounter yet another problem that I don’t know how to solve, but I go away, sleep on it and work at finding a solution, which I normally do. I have got help from some great forums for free – it is amazing what some people will do for you for nothing.
You have given me the motivation to carry on and believe in what I am doing, as I was about to give up – again! – so thanks.

LOL – As has already been said Sally….
That story reminds me of myself!
In fact I was worse… I spent 3 DAYS trying to master creating a cover!!
Now I realise that my time is worth far more and I just order the graphics!
And as for forums – some of my best contacts have come from forums, and 3 partnerships that are making me money daily came from an initial forum contact!
Hence why I also promote getting involved in forums and building relationships there.
These days it gives me a great thrill to see someone in my own forum grow and succeed because they asked questions, took action and built relationships….
So yeah – some great advice as usual from you Sally
Warm Regards
Randy

Hi Sally.
What a super blog. Every newbie, has experienced, or in my case, is experiencing the difficulties and frustrations you describe. After reading, and in some cases, being taken in by the B S promotions put out by the internet Highway men. I find the integrity and truth of your blog, deeply refreshing, and motivational. You have made me realise that it is time to Spring clean my computer, get rid of the information overload stored there, and follow your advice.
Wishing you future sucess. Regaeds Dave V

Hi Edson, thanks for your comment, I completely agree with you people are to quick to move onto the next project without completing any.
Hello John, yes it’s a bit of pain having to re-learn stuff but yes you are right, there is no point moaning about.
Hey Ron, there is nothing to say you have to follow the crowd so good to see your trying out something different, if it work’s out let me know.
Hiya Mark D, well it seems like you are doing well, perhaps it’s time you outsourced some help by way of an assistant to lighten your load.
Hi Eric, I agree that running after all the courses the guru put out is not a good idea, but their slick copy seems to reel people in.
Hey Charlie, yes you are right, there are lots of great free tools, my new favourite is Google Analytics, once I learn how to use it that is.
Hello Gill, thanks for your comment, yes more times than not forum members have helped me out for free too, so forums are a great resource when you are in need of help.
Hey Randy, your forum is one of my favourites and I bet your ecover wasn’t as bad as the one I designed!
Hello Dave, you better get your marigolds on for that spring cleaning, thanks for your comment it made me smile, it’s nice to know that you find my blog helpful.

I recognise and suffered some of the difficulties & frustrations experienced by you all but I battled on mainly with the help of Youtube and now have a wordpress blog, page 1 on Google with one keyword, but alas no traffic thus no sales.
My initial success has given me enormous belief in my ability because I began with zero knowledge but I am now really struggling to move forward.I will take on board some of your comments, join some forums and hopefully this will give me a kick start.
Cheers

Hi Sally.
Once again a great post filled with gems.
The biggest problem is knowing what to do your self and what to out source. That unfortunately only comes with experience and time.
The more you are exposed to these problems, the better you get at solving them.
Thank you for sharing.

Hello Daiarian, hmmm if you are on the 1st of Google for a profitable search term you should be making sales, use the contact button above and I shall take a look to see why you are not making any sales.
Hi Rod, I agree with you 100%, and if you can get help to solve the problems you come up against, it really does makes the difference.

Hi Sally,
nice info you give infact I have always relied mostly on myself and gone on a do-it-all-yourself program which has paid little or no gains to me at all.But I think the best way to have success in life is reaching to others and getting the help you need from them either by paying or in exchange for something.there is a price to pay always.
This has been one of the most helpful things I have read. I have been attempting to teach myself internet marketing for the past few months but apart from selling a few things on eBay, haven’t accomplished anything. I have loads of newsletters sent to me via my emaila, all jam packed with information, most of it really good, yet I still don’t know what I have to do to actually get started. Anyway, I am going to visit the forums as suggested.

Hi Ralf,
What you should do is find someone willing to help you (I would be happy to help), don’t go it alone, there are many genuine people online that will be glad to point you in the right direction.
Hey Mary,
Again, I would say the same to you, there are so many people who have all the information they need but can’t seem to make the first step in using this information to their advantage. Get help, feel free to contact me at my support desk and I will give you a push in the right direction.

Hi Sally,
Another great post. I just love the way you tell it as it is!
I can truly relate to your quote” That’s exactly how I started out, dumb and poor!”…..that’s me!!
Actually I have been my own worst enemy sometimes trying to do things, especially little techie things, that drive me nuts, waste my time and only result in frustration.
Until recently in our MWA3.0 program I thought that outsourcing was for established people…but how wrong I was. Even as a newbie marketer, I probably need to outsource more than people more established.
This will speed up my growth, reduce the frustrations and hopefully put a few dollars in my bank account.
Thanks again Sally…as always your post is “right on the ball”

Hi Sally,
Great post! I am learning more and more that there is a lot more to LEARN! The list of items for newbies to grasp can be daunting but perseverance and patience and asking for help will ultimately get us to the end result that we are looking to gain.
Thanks for all of your great info! I keep reading your posts faithfully and always look forward to the next one!

One day you will look back and realise you have learned a ton!
Just keep applying yourself everyday, taking massive action and you will get exactly where you want to be.
I can already see how far you have come in just a few short weeks, so who knows where you will be in a year!

Thanks Sally,
I really enjoyed your post. Yes, I have gone from one to the next. Also feel very fortunate to have a hubby who was a software engineer, so he can do things for me. Right now he is trying to figure out how to upload an unusual video “form” to YouTube, I just throw up my hands when it didn’t work!
I truly agree with you about education, I love learning, in fact, I tend to “learn” more than apply! NOT GOOD!
Thanks again, really enjoy all your information.

Sally,

This is a great post. Education is very important to success. When I first started blogging, I could only write. I am slowly learning about html etc. That being said I have met up with a lot of great people online who have helped me. I consider them my mentor’s. Thank you for sharing

Hi Sally:
Came hear after reading your tweet. You have a wonderful post as a coach. But Sally I have seen and heard of many marketers who did not earn any money making technique by learning from so called GURUs. The bigger they are, the more they hide the big secrests in their presentation. I believe that 100%. I am not saying it applies to you, because you are starting coaching and that you are more obsessed by giving 100% to the newbies.
That is the main reason I liked your post, as it sounds very real kind of giving.
I liked how Barry won the Free coaching by you.
Keep up the good work.
