Is Social Media FAB or a FAD?

Hey Folks,
I am just off a skype call to my newest buddy, Jaycee of JanetChandler.Com.
Now I know I should be writing blog posts about my time spent at the Internet Millionaires summit but…
Jaycee is writing it all up in a report so I figured it would be kinda silly me doing the same thing right?
My Notes Were Full Of Doodles Anyway…
Plus I am sure her notes are wayyyyyy better than mine, I am a terrible doodler, especially when my mind starts to wander and I am not concentrating properly.
And for some weird reason I am obsessed with signing my own name and over and over again, not quite sure why?
Maybe I am imagining signing all those big cheques for when the cash is pouring into my bank account???
Anyway, I am leaving the Millionaire Secrets Summit update in the very capable hands of Jaycee, as I know she will do a top job.
There were many great speakers at the Summit, but my favorite was…
Mili Ponce
If you don’t know Mili she is the Social Media Marketing Queen.
Mili only went to her first Internet Marketing Seminar because a guy she fancied had a spare ticket and asked her to go with him.
She only went to her second seminar because her advances towards that guy didn’t work first time round!
That made me laugh!
I bet she is super glad she went now though.
Mili is currently making a ton of money online, after starting out with just a Twitter account which made her $500 in 16 days.
I was very impressed with her presentation, she shared a ton of top information for free.
She actually inspired me so much, that I took action and started a little hobby niche project on the side, so hopefully it brings in the cash.
I will keep you updated on that and if it works I will detail all the steps I took in a report for you to duplicate yourself.
As I don’t have a lot of time to spare right now, I shall only be dedicating a short amount of time on it, but as it is mostly on auto-pilot it should not be too hard to manage.
The automation was the attraction for me, I love the lazy ways to do things.
I know Jaycee will be speaking about Mili’s social media marketing methods in her ebook, so be sure to read it.
And if social media interests you, then you can download some of Mili’s free reports here:
http://www.socialmediaexperts4u.com/
Before Mili began her presentation, we were shown this video…
In case you couldn’t watch the video, here is a quick recap of some of the main points…
- Over 50% Of The World’s Population is UNDER 30 years old.
- 96% of Millennials have joined a social network.
- Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.
- Social Media has overtaken PORNOGRAPHY as the No1 activity on the Web.
This is the amount of time it took the following to reach 50 million users…
- Radio – 38 years
- TV – 13 years
- Internet – 4 years
- Ipod – 3 years
Facebook hit 200 million users in under 1 year.
Wow, that’s amazing don’t you think?
I know most of my friends are facebook addicts, but I wonder, would it really work as a method of marketing your online business?
There is also quote in the video…
We don’t have a choice on whether we DO social media… the questions is how well we DO it… “Eric Qualman”.
So I was wondering…
Are you currently using social media for marketing your online business?
Or do you think Social Media is a fad and a waste of time???
Sally
ps. In the video it says that some Universities have stopped issuing email accounts and are now giving out Ipads…. If you know which ones they are, please let me know, I am dying to get my hands on an Ipad!

Hi Sally
I am a newbie in MWA3.0. Ican see why Alex mentioned you in the last training seminar. Your blog rocks. Great info, very practical and I am learning a lot. I am slowly getting my feet wet and with help from J T Martin (a previous year Alex student) did a one way ADSWAP and obtained 47 subscribers. So what Alex teaches does work and am going to do more of giveways etc to build the list. I am overwhelmed but chipping away slowly and am looking at you as one of the key people to follow
Thanks

Hey Bhadra,
Thank you for your kind comments
Didn’t know whether to strangle Alex or kiss him when he showed my blog!
But as he was saying nice things, I was really pleased.
That’s great you are getting help from a previous student, always good to get some extra encouragement and be accountable to someone else too.
Well done on the list building, it is an area many people struggle with online, so you are already way ahead of the pack.
Keep up the good work, Sally

Hi Sally. I used to think Twitter was a waste of time. Then it started being one of my most valuable traffic sources and I changed my tune. It tends to be a top traffic producer, and the people that come from there stay over six minutes on my site. Facebook ranks pretty high too.
I’m still under-utilizing social media, but I’d be a real ninny not to get smarter about it as I move forward. Not that I have anything against ninnies. Haha.
Have a great weekend!

It’s great to be back here and reading your blog. Thanks for sharing the great information about what you learned from Mili Ponce.
I know social media is so big at the moment and is not something we can ignore. Hopefully I’ll be getting round to mastering facebook soon. Well I know blogs are a form of social media and from what I’ve experienced so far, it is definitely here to stay and not a FAD. So get out there and do some social media guys!

I am sure we will meet soon, would be cool to meet you in person….finally!
All my friends are facebook addicts and moan at me all the time to use it, so I am like you, not really mastered it’s full potential yet.
What is a little worrying is that I heard a rumour facebook may be going to a paid option, so you will need to pay a monthly fees to use it, this may see a drop in numbers, who knows.
Hope your wife had a nice birthday, after all, it was the reason you couldn’t come the summit!

There is no doubt that social media is lively, but the question is, how much traffic can it bring in to you?
The large number of users do help increase your odds on how likely it is that you will bring in traffic, but you need the effort and “skill” to make social media marketing work.
Great post

Hey Joe,
Well I think it can drive you a ton of traffic, if like you say, you do it the right way.
I know one of my top sources of traffic, after the mighty Google of course, is Twitter.
I don’t use Twitter as much as I should, so with a bit more effort I think it could be a massive source of traffic for me.

I’m curious to see what you have planned as I was thinking about starting something too because this is just too big to miss out on.

Hey Sally,
A great post on Social Media and my answer to your question is this: Social Media certainly is no FAD. People who are thinking such don´t know how to use it properly. For me Twitter is a major source of traffic to my blog and I have come to know a great bunch of fabulous people over the last 12 months on Twitter. In deed Social Media has helped me to redefine my business future and the support I got from those new acquaintances on Twitter was priceless. So, no, it certainly is way beyond the FAD status it might have started out at. Today thousands upon thousands of people are using Social Media to fuel their business and reach out to customers and prospects in a fun and easy way like they would have never been able to before the Social Media Revolution began (I like the first video on this matter even better than the 2nd one!). Recently I got notice of a Ryan Deiss promotion where he is selling a course on becoming a Social Media Manager. In his promotion video he was referencing to an article in the INC.-magazine. Here is the link to the article that will open the eyes for those who are still sceptical about Social Media and whether or not they should use it in their business: http://www.inc.com/news/articles/2010/04/how-social-media-helps-small-business.html
Keep the good stuff coming and I hope you have a great weekend.
Mirko
P.S. You were saying something nice about my accent on your latest comment on my blog and I´d like to give that compliment back. The first time I heard your accent I thought it was Irish but then I learned that it is Scotish. When I first came to meet someone from Scotland many years back I had a hard time to even understand a word he was saying. Nowadays I love the Scotish accent and have ever since met such an incredible amount of fabulous people from Scotland. You Scots rock!

Hi Sally,
First off I would like to say what a great post. Knowing the average age for social medias users can be a key to what type of products and services they are going to buy.
I personally believe social media is going to get bigger and just like Myspace, I’m sure facebook will fizzle out because there will be another bigger and better service.
Once people realize that you put together social media with a good size mailing list and you find a formula for success.

Hi Sally,
How do people know where their traffic is coming from? Or know specifically if it’s Twitter?
Most of my traffic comes from the recognition I get from other blogs, (such as yourself).
Well, those are the readers that make comments.
If I get traffic that doesn’t comment, I don’t know where they came from or who they are.
(I’m still convinced that some of Jean’s traffic is really looking for the virgin she advertises and why the age demographic are boys ages 10 – 16.)

Soccer topics with Mirko. I think the south americans will be hard to beat on this one.
In terms of social media, I have not tried marketing heavily on them. Twitter is also doing OK for me to send people to my blog. I plan to focus more on Twitter at some point to build relationships.
With Facebook, I have not tried it yet as a source to make money. I think Mirko has made a point that it comes down as to how you go about it to make the money. I only have a personal profile at Facebook.
Alex Whalley has put a contraversial post on social media at his blog. I agree to some extent with what he says in terms of network marketers uses them heavily.
So touch and go for me on this topic. I think the best way is to use them heavily to meet people and direct them to our blog would be more benefitial over the long term.

I’d say social media is a passing fad, its being picked up by yogurt makers and other products, its being hijacked for personal profit and that will lead to it being viewed as uncool. Sooner or later it will pass and something else with take its place… People will probably still work together on things via contributing but social media seems like it will fail.
