Writing Testimonials Benefit You Too
Ok, today I want to write about testimonials…
So why you should write testimonials for product owners?
AND
How do testimonials benefit YOU?
Providing a written, audio or video testimonial is a fabulous idea!
I love providing a testimonial for genuinely great products.
After all, it gives me a chance to pay back the product owner for creating something that has helped me.
Now before I go any further, I want you to understand a very important point.
TESTIMONIAL BENEFITS FOR YOU COME LAST!
By this I mean that you should not solely provide a testimonial for your own benefit.
Testimonials should be provided to help another potential customer decide if they should buy that product or not.
Any benefits for you that come from providing a testimonial are just the icing on the cake.
So now we have that clear, let’s move on.
TESTIMONIAL BENEFITS FOR YOU…
Right, first things first, if you have never seen a customer testimonial, look at mine here:
>>>> Sally’s Testimonial
Ooops, there’s a little typo on it, but I will tell Rob to change it.
Ok, now you know what a testimonial looks like.
Now obviously my testimonial benefits Rob and Paul, because I have briefly described how those Aweber videos helped my online business.
I actually got some super sneaky tips from the videos so was really glad I watched them all.
If you think you are an experienced aweber user, think again, I am willing to bet you learn TONS from the Awebextra videos.
So we know my testimonial benefited Rob and Paul yes?
But on the other side of the coin, how do you think that testimonial benefited me?
GET A REVIEW COPY
Well the very very very first benefit was that I was lucky enough to get VIP access to the product before anyone else in exchange for an honest testimonial.
I get lots of testimonial requests, and I always ask for a review copy of the product first.
I would NEVER give a blind testimonial, by that I mean I always want access to a product before I will give my opinion of it.
If a person refuses to give you a review copy, don’t give a testimonial.
A long time ago someone asked me for a testimonial, I asked for a review copy and they sent me to the payment page.
Such a cheek!
They explained that I could purchase the product and write the testimonial, if I didn’t like the product I could have a refund.
YEAH RIGHT!
I decide what products I want to buy and that was not a reason that enticed me to buy that product for sure.
Needless to say, they didn’t get a testimonial from me ha ha.
DON’T WAIT TO BE ASKED FOR A TESTIMONIAL…
There is no rule to say you have to wait to be asked for a testimonial.
If you have purchased a product and received a great benefit from it, let the product owner know.
Send them a nice email, or contact their support desk, and offer a free testimonial for their product.
They may publish it, they may not, either way you have not lost anything.
NEVER GIVE A FALSE TESTIMONIAL
There is nothing on this earth that could persuade me to write anything false, embellish or lie about a product in a testimonial.
I do not want to be associated with any kind of deceit, if a product is utter crap, I will simply refuse to give a testimonial, and so should you.
Providing a glowing testimonial for a poor product will damage your trust and credibility, NEVER DO IT.
Be wary of product owners trying to put words in your mouth too.
It’s fine for them to ask you to highlight certain benefits of the product, but don’t let them tell you what to say.
Trust me, some people can be very pushy with testimonials.
Another point to mention is always check the testimonial when it’s live.
I have seen product owners change or completely rewrite parts of my testimonial without asking me first.
Most honest marketers will not do this, but some sneaky ones will, you have been warned.
SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE…
Don’t be tempted to rush out and spit out a ton of testimonials all over the place!
Choose the products you provide testimonials for sparingly, and save them for the best ones.
Once you start to give testimonials, you will notice that you will receive an increase of testimonial requests for other products, choose carefully that’s all I am saying.
The reason you get more testimonial requests is because people seeking out testimonials for their product, will often visit related product sales pages and contact the people who have given a testimonial for that product already.
GET YOURSELF KNOWN…
Providing testimonials can get your face seen by thousands of people.
That’s if the product owner allows a photograph of you to be included with your testimonial.
Your status is immediately raised when you appear on the sales page of a particular marketer, you are almost on a par with them.
The product owner is saying they trust your opinion enough to include it on their sales page.
If you are lucky enough to get a testimonial on a very popular product sales page, your lovely face will be seen by thousands, maybe even millions of people.
People who will see you as someone who can be trusted, if they buy and like the product so that’s very good for your image.
A TINY TRICKLE OF TRAFFIC…
Now essentially, the idea of the testimonial is to increase sales of that product right?
So we are not trying to “steal traffic” from the sales page.
We are merely aligning ourselves with the product, the product owner and getting ourselves seen.
But with any good testimonial, to prove it is real, you will normally be allowed to add your name and your site name too.
Kinda like a little free mini advertisement for you.
This can mean a nice free back link to your site, which is always good.
However, you don’t always get a back link, sometimes the link can be in an image like:
>>>>> My testimonial here
So although my link is not “live” people can still see it and if they wanted to, they could type my website address in their browser bar and visit my site.
That is a really easy way to get some free traffic to your site.
Ok so maybe it’s not going to be floods of traffic right?
But every little helps, even a tiny little traffic trickle.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Seriously testimonials build relationships, they do!
Just think, you give someone a glowing testimonial about their product, do you think they are gonna like you after that?
Of course they will!
I have built up many great relationships with several Marketers after providing testimonials for their products.
It also means that when I come to release my own products, I should hopefully be able to approach them and ask for a testimonial for my product too.
ENHANCES YOUR AFFILIATE PRODUCT PROMOTIONS…
Don’t you agree that it looks wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better when you send out an email promoting a product and your testimonial is on the page?
Instant proof that you have used and like the product.
Too many people send out promo email after promo email, it’s nice to receive an email, then see a REAL testimonial from you on the sales page.
I have learned that anytime I send out an email promoting a product, I will receive AT LEAST 20-30 replies from my subscribers asking if I have used the product, have I made money from it, is it easy etc etc.
I have to be extra careful with the products I promote now and have become very selective of what I promote.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN…
Well I think that about wraps up the reasons testimonials benefit both the product owner and you.
Try it out, I am sure you will be really happy with the results.
But remember the tips I shared above…
- Never Lie
- Choose Carefully
- Check the Live Testimonial
- Get Yourself Seen!
I am sure you guys and gals may have some more benefits or points to add, so feel free to put them in your comments below.

Hi Sally
Great post, it reminded me of when I first started out online and I was asked to provide a testimonial for the first time. I was really excited, it was a new concept to me and I really wanted to do a good job for the product owner.
So away I went and wrote the review. I had reservations over the quality of the product and whether I would have been happy paying for it, but I wrote the review anyway & I was ‘nice’ and I highlighted some of the good parts (there were a few) and I submitted it.
Luckily for me the person in question didn’t use my testimonial and I was relieved, because I really didn’t think the product was good enough, but it was my first time and I wanted to do a good job for them.
It was a good learning curve because these days I have no problem saying no (I’ll always offer constructive feedback though).
We work hard to build a brand and it pays to protect it, equally when you have built a good brand and people trust you, the testimonial you provide probably adds more value, and maybe some pressure too, that the buyer will blame you if it’s not as good as you’ve said.
Nice post…oh the early days, I’m glad they’re over
Cheers

Your sounding old… when you first started online in the 70′s ha ha ha.
Yeah, I remember the good old days, I too was kinda star struck when I initially got asked for testimonials, that’s why I am trying to warn others not to do that too.
It’s horrid saying no to people for testimonials, jv requests etc, but I just try not to think about it now to keep my own conscience clear.
Your really spot on, building a brand, and we certainly don’t want it tarnished by some dodgy testimonial for sure!

Hi Sally,
You are absolutely right about the benefits of testimonials. And even more so about not giving one when the product or service does not pass muster.
I am glad, too, that your link worked. I was out shooting Big Ben today (haha, wait for my next blog post
) and was musing about stuff I wanted to find out about Aweber. What was the first thing I saw when I logged on? Your blog post duly highlighted in your RSS feed (another thing I copied from you). I’ll trundle over there now and get the videos.
Just want to use this occasion to give you a testimonial for the interview you did with Dave Taylor. Really great content! A lesson to us all. Even better, I’ll use the kind offer to distribute it to my list.
Keep up the good work, and may your shoulder be restored as if by magic.

Good points on false testimonials. That is never a good idea. It is best to stick with what you know. For example, I used an seo software for years before I wrote a review about it. That was when I could honestly say I knew the software intimately. I am not saying it takes that long to get to know a product, but it helps my credibility a bit.

Hiya Brandon,
Wow seriously, you used it for years before writing a review, I never heard of anyone do that before.
Must have been some review!
It’s so much easier to write a review or a testimonial when you know a product or software inside out, and I think it shows when you write about it too.
Ill informed reviews or very vague ones get on my nerves and are of no help to anyone.

Does not always work that, because some people click and others don’t, but when it works it can be so very rewarding in many different ways.

Hi Sally
Liked the post, very informative and you have shared some good points as well on benefits.
What I’m trying to further understand is that if I have never given any testimonials, though I have purchased quite a few products, do I just contact the owner of these products as I like their products and tell them that I would like to offer them my testimonial about the product ?
And you also mentioned that you ask for review copies of the product before giving them testimonials … how do you get these requests .. have you registered somewhere or due to your presence on the internet.
Cheers!

Hey Abizer,
Did you go to the Millionaire Summit, I saw you mentioned it on skype, was my mum’s birthday so I couldn’t go to that one.
In a word YES, you just contact them.
If you think about it, how many times have you seen testimonials that are like a “case study” where people have used a product or service to great effect then been used as a case study and got a ton of free promo!
Find a product, use it, if it works and you get fab results, let the owner know, you might just end up getting your very own case study promotion which is like hitting the jackpot!
Erm yes, I think there is a site where you sometimes get a JV copy of a product, I think its called http://www.jvnotifypro.com/ you don’t always get a freebie but sometimes you do.
The more you get known online the more you will be approached too, trust me, it’s not always good to get free copies, very time consuming going through all the products,
Hope that helps, Sally
This is indeed a great read. Testimonials have always proved to be a free way of promoting yourself. It seems you must be having a good time if product owners are approaching for testimonials. I think that’s some way of having the product free, that is, if you are given a sample copy!

I will sometimes go and checkout the websites for the people giving testimonials and see who they are and what they are about.
If the product is really good it adds to the credibility of the people giving testimonials. At the same time if a person perceives the product as not being good it could also hurt the credibility of the people giving testimonials.

Hey Sally,
Superb post about the power of writing testimonials. I loved the way you reversed the angle of how one might usually look at the benefits of product or service testimonials. Most people might fall to the thought “How does providing a testimonial benefit me?”
Now, it´s certainly not objectionable to ask yourself that question, but it´s the wrong order of questions.
How does this product benefit my readers and subscribers? That´s the first and foremost question you should ask yourself. If you´ve got a good product of which you are convinced that it´ll benefit your tribe than a testimonial will benefits “you too” -brilliant.
I´ve gone over your points twice but still can´t think of anything to add to that comprehensive list of advices on writing testimonials. Awesome post.

Hi Sally,
Great post (as always)
After years of giving testimonials I can back up what you say about getting known and getting review copies of products, and building relationships with people… it really does benefit us all.
But, I also completely agree that you should check the product AND be honest… Only giving a testimonial for products that you feel are quality!
One trick I have often done is caught people out and saved myself from spending money – by following a testimonial link to see if the marketer who is singing praises of a product is actually using it….lol
E.G. – I gave a testimonial for Ultimate Footer Ad (that we both use and love), so anyone who checks our blogs will see that we do actually use it!
In the past I’ve been to sites of testimonial givers to see that they are not using whatever script/software they have written great things about – so that immediately gets me wondering…
So it is vital that we only give genuine testimonials!
I’ve often written back and simply said – I’ll have to decline on this occassion, but do try to leave a door open for any future product, and I’cve found it does no harm to be honest and decline some products.
Hope that adds a little to your post

Sally,
As always, another good read. Have to agree with Randy on his points also. As he does, I will tend to follow links in testimonials to find out if the person is using the product, OR, just to find out if the url in his testimonial is valid.
Case in point, I was looking at a site the other day where the person was pitching ‘his’ coaching program. There were a few testimonials from people about how he has helped them. One of the links that I followed was to a valid site but the other link was a redirect right back to the page I was on! Needless to say, I didn’t read any more of the ‘sales’ page, closed the tab and actually unsubscribed from his list.
I good testimonial with a good link back to your site is a good traffic generator and backlink…
Keep up the good work!

Well you just proved a valuable point, if people use false or fake testimonials, it will only hurt them in the end.
Anyway, if a product is so fab, it really should not be that hard to get real people to provide real testimonials.

Hi Sally,
Thanks for sharing this great tip!
One thing that we might need to consider about testimonials is that we must first have some sort of a relationship with that person. Meaning that we must at least know the person for some time before that person would be willing to provide a testimonial for us.
So I guess building a relationship first is a must before we can even talk about requesting or giving testimonials to/from others.
Do keep providing all the great tips!
Twitter: sallyneill
says:
Hey Eruwan,
I can see your point, it does help if you at least know the person, and they have a good reputation online if that’s what your meaning.
You certainly don’t want your name on the sales page of some dodgy marketer who has ripped people off that’s for sure.
So perhaps at least a little knowledge of the product owner would be a good idea, a quick google search would more than likely show up anything untoward.
Fab comment, never thought about it that way, that’s why I love the comments on my blog, it’s great to hear other peoples points of view.

Building relationships – I don’t know how well it would have worked just cold because I sort of knew you through the VIP list and your blog, but the testimonial and the few early email exchanges have continued and grown ever since and we’ve become friends…you know I’m here and vice versa…and all from a testimonial
Never give a false testimonial – I was really happy for you to do a testimonial before I really knew you, not only because I enjoyed the way you write, but I had the feeling that you weren’t the kind of person to just be polite and you’d honestly tell us if what we’d made was a big stinking pile of poo…(don’t get me wrong, we were proud of it but you know when you spend a lot of time on something and get close to it you can sometimes lose perspective). So you’re right, people should never be afraid of being honest and upsetting the product creator…never fake your review, you can spot those ones a mile off!
Get them in quickly – Sally fired back her thoughts super quick…I said within a week if possible…she replied within 24 hours!!!…which is why she’s got top testimonial spot. We appreciated her effort by putting it first in the testimonials to give her that bit more exposure than the others lower down the page might get.

Hey Rob,
Yeah kids huh! You need a thick skin, they just tell you like it is.
I agree, it’s funny how from just a few emails you can make friends with someone, it’s kinda cool too, the power of the internet n all that.
Stinky piles of poo ha ha, I maybe wouldn’t use those words, but yeah I am not afraid to speak my mind, don’t want to be recommending nothing dodgy that’s for sure.
Was that why I got the top spot on the testimonials? See it pays to be fast ha ha.
I will certainly fire over a copy of my plugins guide, and the blog hopping one, very kind of you to offer to have a look for me.
I know it’s your stag night soon, so have a ball, be good and I hope all goes well on the big day.

Hi Sally,
Great post! I have been approached a few times about giving a testimonial. Although it would give free exposure, I will not do it unless I have the time to fully review the product.
Now some have said, I can write the testimonials for you as long as you put your name to it….nope not my type of review!
And the last thing, it can be hard telling people their product is not really that good but in the end, they usually understand and work on it being better.

Hey Edson,
Yeah I know what you mean.
It really is very time consuming reviewing products and once you start getting a ton of requests you just have to be really picky.
Actually never thought about your point of telling them exactly what is wrong so they can maybe modify the product and make it better, that’s a fab idea.
Catch you soon, Sally
Hi Sally
Just bought Awebextra from your link. Since you’re giving away such a gleaming testimonial, I know it must be a quality product.
Got to consume the videos now.

Hey Welly
Aww thanks, that’s really nice you bought through my link
Got the paypal payment received email, love getting them for obvious reasons.
I found the videos really helpful, I think I am becoming a bit of a statistic and tracking addict now, used to hate all that stuff, but monitoring it is giving me better results.
Love your graphics site by the way, really outstanding quality, will be highly recommending your service.
Sally
Hi Sally,
Gawd, you are one busy lady – you are everywhere!
Or do we move in the same circles?
Interesting post especially the part about giving testimonials unasked for.
Time to think again.Hmm.
I went for the Awebextra through your link because I think it is worth it and I know Paul And Rob are OK guys.
It was the testimonial that did it!
You are on the move up, Sally. Good luck.

Thank you for buying through my link, got the payment notification from paypal
I really hope the videos help you, they helped me tons!
Aweber is quite expensive and I know for a fact I was not using it to it’s full potential, but all that’s gonna change now.
Thanks for your comment and my commission, see ya around!
Sally
Hey Sally,
Great post!! You’ve picked up on some great points, especially about building relationships. That’s pretty much what this business is built on right??!
I have only written a handful of testimonials personally. I only tend to write them if I’m asked, but you sound like you’re very proactive
Any that I have written, I always make sure to get a review copy of some sort so I can check things through first!
Thanks for writing a testimonial for Awexextra too! This will benefit both of us in different ways, and I am sure we will build a good relationship which will help us both longer term!
I definitely owe you a beer or two when we meet up
Anyway, off for some zzzzz it’s getting late!
Talk real soon,

Hey Paul,
I loved reviewing the Awebextra product it helped me a whole lot, kinda advanced stuff but I know it’s gonna help my business greatly.
In the past I used to just churn out my emails and not track them in any way, I can see now why that was soooo wrong!
Also loving the fact there is 100% commissions for promoting it too obviously, hopefully other marketers jump on board and promote for you both too.
Not sent out to my “list” yet, but will be doing that next week, once you and Rob have had your fun on the stag weekend.
It’s always good to recommend a product that you know will genuinely help others, getting paid for recommending it is the icing on the cake.
I look forward to you buying me a nice cold budweiser ha ha.
Sally
Wow, I’ve never really put that much thought into testimonials like your blog did, very insightful, thanks sally!

Hi Sally,
How Cool! You Got Money!! (That was meant to sounds like from the movie “You’ve Got Mail”
)
OK now seriously. Excellent advice on testimonials. At this stage the only testimonials I have out there are for JT’s Masterclass cause I LOVED it! And ‘Multi Profit Websites” Love the concept of the website, have made one website that has been generating a trickle of adsense income. Could do more with that product if I had the time!
I have been asked for others, however I haven’t had the time to actually go through the products yet!
I don’t believe in giving a testimonial that is false and nor do I believe in giving a testimonial on a product on face value. I will only give testimonials of products that I have gone through, read or used.
Randy is a great example of that! He walks the talk when it comes to testimonials.
I like the idea of offering a testimonial. I hadn’t thought of that! Bimbo brain at it again!
I have a heap of products that I have gone through and learned a heap from and really love. Hmmm food for thought should offer a testimonial!!
Plus I have no problems what so ever, if I don’t really like a product I will be honest enough and let people know why I don’t like the product and offer suggestions on how they can improve the product.
I complained to JT for a year he needed to add in transcriptions of his training videos. I ended up transcribing last years course myself because I didn’t have time to re-watch the videos and having transcriptions to refer back to was easier.
He added them this year due to my nagging! See! I give good testimonials. “Love your course BUT…….”
Plugins hmmmmmm I could be cheeky here!
OK on that note I will be a good girl and get back to blog hopping. Got to check up on those late challengers!
Cheers
Jacinta

Hi Sally
Thats a great post you have put together there. As you rightly say testimonials are important and they do need to be traceable with a genuine website address – not one of these “Brian from London” that we see on sales material ocassionaly
I have only ever been asked to write one or two but I intend for all future product promotions rather than do it in the email write it in a dedicated blog and declare if the product has been reviewed – now thats accountability
Take Care

Great post – testimonials can be really good for you not least because as you say they add credibility and build your brand and reputation.
I usually offer testimonials for products that I have liked as I think its good to give useful feedback. Sadly I’m not yet in the inner circle to get review copies but will get there eventually!!

It’s so true that you should be honest with your testimonials and those testimonial that benefit YOU come last. I think in over a period of time you can build up a pretty good credibility and reputation for your own goods.
It’s amazing how much you have accomplished over such a short amount of time.. Sometimes I feel there’s like 3 of you lol.

Testimonials are very important. Mainly because its like one friend telling another friend what a product is really like.
That reminds me, I came across this guy that was selling mini-site graphics. It’s not just the graphics it is the technology written in the code. I purchased them for $27 and got 7 completed websites with banners and everything. Sally check it out and tell me what you think. http://www.heavymetalmarketing.org/
Anyway how are things going with you its been a while since I last posted on your site. Which looks very good I might add.

What are the perfect testimonials that you have seen?
I like the ones that I see when I visit any of John Carlton’s sites. Written like the shortest possible essence of the most essential part of the product.
Something, that makes you want to see more. If you want to write a testimonial, you like or even love the product.
Would you agree that the quality of a product defines the quality of the words used in the testimonial?
that said,
What are the great testimonials that you have read so far?
