blog hopping tips If you are regularly oil rig or blog hopping then there are a few rules I would suggest you abide by…

Here are my five commandments of blog hopping etiquette.

A little fun list I put together after someone emailed me and said they want to blog hop but don’t know what to put in comments they leave…

1. Thou Shalt Not Pimp Thy Blog To Steal Thy Fellow Bloggers Traffic

The purpose of blog hopping is to add value to the blog author’s original post.

The purpose is not to blatantly advertise your site and steal their traffic.

Therefore you should not pack your comment with links intended to take traffic away from the author’s blog.

Many bloggers already reward you with link love through the form of comment luv.

This allows your last blog post to be displayed under your name beside a sweet little image of a love heart like this:

bailey ing blog commentClick The Above Image To Visit Bailey Ing’s Blog

The comment luv link opens in a new window, which means you are not leaving the original site.

So once your done looking at the other link, which you found on the first blog,  and close the page down, the original blog post will still be there for you  to leave a comment.

If you add your own url link into a blog post, this means someone will click it and be taken from the original blog post to your site.

Now this might seem fabulous for you!

But you’re essentially stealing traffic from the original blog, it’s not a nice way to blog hop, don’t do it.

2. Thou Shalt Not Keyword Spam Thy Neighbors Blog

Ok, so when you leave a comment you get to put your name and a link to your website.

Visitors to the blog will see your name and when they click on it, a new page will open and take them to your site.

Use your real name please!

I know your real name is not…

Cheap Computer Supplies

Ultimate Twitter Guide

Get Hot Russian Girls Now

etc etc.

If your real name is “Ultimate Twitter Guide” I would suggest perhaps changing your name by deed poll to avoid any unfair repercussions in the future.

Comments with names submitted like this, have no place on my blog and will not be accepted.

They will more than likely end up in the spam bin and serve no purpose to you.

I get a ton of spam comments a day, and I cannot check them all, so if you add links or use your name field in this way and your comment does not appear, more than likely you got dumped in a massive spam clearance.

Use your real name and don’t try to spam the name field on comments.

There are sites that use KeywordLuv, will allows a user to fill in their name in this format:

Sally@Internet Marketing Tips as shown below:

jose perez Click The Above Image To Visit Jose Perez Blog

This will show your name and let you throw in some relevant keywords (anchor text) to your business plus give a link to your site.

Anchor text can be beneficial for backlinks and help your site rank better for those words.

This is the only time I suggest you should you be using keywords in the blog comments name field.

I do not use the keywordluv plugin on my blog, but it is something I may add it later.

When a blog does have keywordluv all you do is add your name@ some keywords ie.

Sally@Internet Marketing Tips or John@Ecover Graphic Designer etc.

If you don’t want to have any anchor text or keywords in your comment, simply put your own name in the name field box.

You can get the keywordluv plugin at this link (but be careful as it is not compatible with every wordpress theme):

3. Thou shalt not add a CRAP Comment

Now whilst I love comments on my blog and welcome them with open arms, a two word comment does not excite me.

Bloggers are taking the time to write really great posts packed with a wealth of information for you, for FREE.

Adding a comment of:

nice blog thanks

great stuff

i love your blog

wow sally your brilliant

They really do not cut it.

Try and give the blog author some good honest feedback in your comment.

Think about the 5 W’s and the 1 H.

There is a nice little rhyme you can try to remember from Rudyard Kipling:

I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);

Their names are What and Why and When

And How and Where and Who.

WHAT…WHY…WHEN…HOW…WHERE…WHO…

I always try to think about all of those terms when I comment on a blog post.

I think about how has reading this post benefited me or will benefit me in the future.

I think to myself, what is so great about the blog post?

Has it made a task easy to follow or simple to apply?

Has the post inspired you to take action?

What action are you going to take and when will you take it, right now, later in your business etc?

Has the post:

Saved you time from searching all over internet for a solution?

Shared great information for free and saved you time or money?

Taught you something new?

Did you specifically enjoy a certain part of the post? etc.

When you comment try to explain how it has made a difference to you by being as descriptive as you can.

Commenting is easy.

Great commenting has to be learned, the more you do it, the better you will get.

You don’t have to be a best selling author or a great writer to post a great blog comment, just share your story with the author.

Practice makes perfect.

Give something back, let the author know you appreciated their post and will be back for more tips from them.

Comments that hold no true value will not help drive traffic to your site.

4. Thou Shalt Credit Thy Source

Whenever I can, I love to give credit to the source of the person / method to which I found a blog post.

Where did you find their blog post?

It’s always nice to give credit to the source of your journey to a blog post.

If you found their blog post from a link on another site, let them know where.

A simple

“hey Sally, I found your blog post from visiting Darren L Carter’s blog” will suffice.

I love knowing where my visitors came from, and will always send a little thank you to anyone sending traffic to my blog.

Spread the love!

5. Thou Shalt Not Kiss The Blog Author’s A$$

You do not have to agree with everything the blog owner is saying in their post.

It is ok to disagree and have your own opinion.

If they are using a method that is not the best, tell them in a comment and make a suggestion of a better method.

You are not personally attacking them, you are merely putting forward a suggestion.

But do it in a nice way, don’t start shouting all over their blog that they are wrong!

Be nice.

Be subtle.

Tell them their post was good, but you know of a better way to do that task.

I have often posted a blog about certain tasks and had suggestions through comments on how to do it better.

I check out these suggestions, and if they are solid, then I will do another post later and say, hey look, I know I told you I was using xxx but Mr Y told me about zzz and I suggest you use that now.

No one knows everything!

Your suggestion might not even be a better solution for that person.

Maybe it helped you but it wouldn’t help them, not everything works in the same way for everybody.

If you have a better suggestion don’t be afraid to share it.

Well that’s  5 little fun blog hopping commandments for you.

I am not saying you have to do all of them, but hopefully it has given you some ideas and tips on how to comment on blogs to maximum effect.

Let’s banish the two word comments on blogs forever.

Remember, you do not want a public slap in a reply comment from the blog owner, reprimanding you for a blatant attempt to get a link on their blog and steal your traffic.

Catch you soon, Sally :)
