Five Commandments Of Blog Hopping
If you are regularly oil rig or blog hopping then there are a few rules I would suggest you abide by…
Here are my five commandments of blog hopping etiquette.
A little fun list I put together after someone emailed me and said they want to blog hop but don’t know what to put in comments they leave…
1. Thou Shalt Not Pimp Thy Blog To Steal Thy Fellow Bloggers Traffic
The purpose of blog hopping is to add value to the blog author’s original post.
The purpose is not to blatantly advertise your site and steal their traffic.
Therefore you should not pack your comment with links intended to take traffic away from the author’s blog.
Many bloggers already reward you with link love through the form of comment luv.
This allows your last blog post to be displayed under your name beside a sweet little image of a love heart like this:
Click The Above Image To Visit Bailey Ing’s Blog
The comment luv link opens in a new window, which means you are not leaving the original site.
So once your done looking at the other link, which you found on the first blog, and close the page down, the original blog post will still be there for you to leave a comment.
If you add your own url link into a blog post, this means someone will click it and be taken from the original blog post to your site.
Now this might seem fabulous for you!
But you’re essentially stealing traffic from the original blog, it’s not a nice way to blog hop, don’t do it.
2. Thou Shalt Not Keyword Spam Thy Neighbors Blog
Ok, so when you leave a comment you get to put your name and a link to your website.
Visitors to the blog will see your name and when they click on it, a new page will open and take them to your site.
Use your real name please!
I know your real name is not…
Cheap Computer Supplies
Ultimate Twitter Guide
Get Hot Russian Girls Now
etc etc.
If your real name is “Ultimate Twitter Guide” I would suggest perhaps changing your name by deed poll to avoid any unfair repercussions in the future.
Comments with names submitted like this, have no place on my blog and will not be accepted.
They will more than likely end up in the spam bin and serve no purpose to you.
I get a ton of spam comments a day, and I cannot check them all, so if you add links or use your name field in this way and your comment does not appear, more than likely you got dumped in a massive spam clearance.
Use your real name and don’t try to spam the name field on comments.
There are sites that use KeywordLuv, will allows a user to fill in their name in this format:
Sally@Internet Marketing Tips as shown below:
Click The Above Image To Visit Jose Perez Blog
This will show your name and let you throw in some relevant keywords (anchor text) to your business plus give a link to your site.
Anchor text can be beneficial for backlinks and help your site rank better for those words.
This is the only time I suggest you should you be using keywords in the blog comments name field.
I do not use the keywordluv plugin on my blog, but it is something I may add it later.
When a blog does have keywordluv all you do is add your name@ some keywords ie.
Sally@Internet Marketing Tips or John@Ecover Graphic Designer etc.
If you don’t want to have any anchor text or keywords in your comment, simply put your own name in the name field box.
You can get the keywordluv plugin at this link (but be careful as it is not compatible with every wordpress theme):
KeywordLuv Compatibility issues.
3. Thou shalt not add a CRAP Comment
Now whilst I love comments on my blog and welcome them with open arms, a two word comment does not excite me.
Bloggers are taking the time to write really great posts packed with a wealth of information for you, for FREE.
Adding a comment of:
nice blog thanks
great stuff
i love your blog
wow sally your brilliant
They really do not cut it.
Try and give the blog author some good honest feedback in your comment.
Think about the 5 W’s and the 1 H.
There is a nice little rhyme you can try to remember from Rudyard Kipling:
I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
WHAT…WHY…WHEN…HOW…WHERE…WHO…
I always try to think about all of those terms when I comment on a blog post.
I think about how has reading this post benefited me or will benefit me in the future.
I think to myself, what is so great about the blog post?
Has it made a task easy to follow or simple to apply?
Has the post inspired you to take action?
What action are you going to take and when will you take it, right now, later in your business etc?
Has the post:
Saved you time from searching all over internet for a solution?
Shared great information for free and saved you time or money?
Taught you something new?
Did you specifically enjoy a certain part of the post? etc.
When you comment try to explain how it has made a difference to you by being as descriptive as you can.
Commenting is easy.
Great commenting has to be learned, the more you do it, the better you will get.
You don’t have to be a best selling author or a great writer to post a great blog comment, just share your story with the author.
Practice makes perfect.
Give something back, let the author know you appreciated their post and will be back for more tips from them.
Comments that hold no true value will not help drive traffic to your site.
4. Thou Shalt Credit Thy Source
Whenever I can, I love to give credit to the source of the person / method to which I found a blog post.
Where did you find their blog post?
It’s always nice to give credit to the source of your journey to a blog post.
If you found their blog post from a link on another site, let them know where.
A simple
“hey Sally, I found your blog post from visiting Darren L Carter’s blog” will suffice.
I love knowing where my visitors came from, and will always send a little thank you to anyone sending traffic to my blog.
Spread the love!
5. Thou Shalt Not Kiss The Blog Author’s A$$
You do not have to agree with everything the blog owner is saying in their post.
It is ok to disagree and have your own opinion.
If they are using a method that is not the best, tell them in a comment and make a suggestion of a better method.
You are not personally attacking them, you are merely putting forward a suggestion.
But do it in a nice way, don’t start shouting all over their blog that they are wrong!
Be nice.
Be subtle.
Tell them their post was good, but you know of a better way to do that task.
I have often posted a blog about certain tasks and had suggestions through comments on how to do it better.
I check out these suggestions, and if they are solid, then I will do another post later and say, hey look, I know I told you I was using xxx but Mr Y told me about zzz and I suggest you use that now.
No one knows everything!
Your suggestion might not even be a better solution for that person.
Maybe it helped you but it wouldn’t help them, not everything works in the same way for everybody.
If you have a better suggestion don’t be afraid to share it.
Well that’s 5 little fun blog hopping commandments for you.
I am not saying you have to do all of them, but hopefully it has given you some ideas and tips on how to comment on blogs to maximum effect.
Let’s banish the two word comments on blogs forever.
Remember, you do not want a public slap in a reply comment from the blog owner, reprimanding you for a blatant attempt to get a link on their blog and steal your traffic.
Catch you soon, Sally

Seriously, you seemed to have grabbed blog commenting and run with it – I see you everywhere right now…do you ever sleep or have you developed a new technique of ‘sleep hopping’ (oil rig hopping while sleeping) <– now that would make a cool report
I doesn't happen to often but it does annoy me when someone leaves a comment which doesn't even look as though they've even read the post!! It does happen but I think by leaving the comment unapproved or marking as spam it will help reduce it over time!

Anyone who follows the advice in this post will be a welcome contributor on my blog or anyone else’s. Great tips, Sally.
When people take the time to leave thoughtful comments, especially if they add their own experiences, it’s a real benefit to readers of the blog. Depending on the type of post/comments, the comment section can often serve as an additional resource to readers of the blog. I’ve seen this to be especially true on “biggest mistakes I’ve made,” type posts, where readers are encouraged to jump in and talk about something they wish they’d done differently when they started out, etc. From a reader’s standpoint, it’s great stuff!

Hi Sally, I’ve been seeing you on quite a few blogs lately and have been meaning to stop by and say “hello”, so here i am. The list of blogs of i’ve seen you on is to long to list them all but i’ve just come over from John McNally’s blog.
I really like this post and its so true. I’ve just started to create rules for my blog as well. What i find frustrating is when people leave a comment that has nothing at all to do with the post i’ve written. For example i’ve loaded a few videos and people have said how well written the post is. I think many of them have created a comment in notepad and just paste it to every blog they visit.
I’ve recently added a few plugins, like commentLuv, subscribe to comments and the wordpress thread comment. Since installing them i’ve noticed a few more quality comments coming in and have decided not to approve the one liners or those with links in.
I’ve seen the KeywordLuv on a few blogs but haven’t tried that one as yet. If you start using it would you let us know about the results it brings please. Maybe write a post on it?
Keep up the excellent work Sally, i’ll be back soon.

I came over from Darrens blog. I am really new to all this and appreciate the advice. From my limited online experience it seems that just as in offline business honesty and integrity are the best way to go.

Hey Sally,
an amazingly detailed set of commandments in your latest blog post. Although the list consists of “only” five commandments I can not think of any other mandatory rules I wish everyone else would be using when commenting on another blogger´s post.
I have to confess that I have broken your 4th rule a couple of times although certainly not to spam any other blog. It was just that I could figure out why the commentluv plugin on many others blogs would pull my latest post. No I finally discovered the error
Following your commandments the blogger world would be even more enriched than it already is. I love the sharing of valuable content which can quite often be found in the content and in the comments and I am sure that I will not get accused of licking anyone´s a.. when I say, that your comments are greatly enriching our community.

Here’s my problem. I don’t use WordPress therefore no commentluv for me. (I know, the crowd goes wild!)
I’m “registered” with commentluv so occasionally they spider my site. They used to do it on Saturday’s. But I’ve been recently skipped. They are pulling an article I wrote 2 weeks ago.
What I’ve been doing is “un-checking” the box pulling my 2 week old article and putting a link at the end of my comment. If you don’t want me to do that, just let me know.

Number 4 and 5 are especially good tips because I love it when someone tells me where they came from, it just adds to the community and you are right, it gives deserving credit to the referring site.
I would add ‘Thou Shalt be Humble’ because cocky site owners that think they are ‘all that’ just shit me.

Hi Sam,
Yes, indeed I do, I always practice what I preach.
I never recommend a method now unless I have tested it myself and no for sure that it works.
People keep asking how I write such good comments, I think I am a secret speed reader and just seem to hone in on the important points of a post and comment on them.
Plus flattery gets you EVERYWHERE, give someone’s ego a little massage and they will be sure to come over to your blog and do the same.
The law of reciprocity at it’s best!
Sally
Those are fairly good guidelines for decent comments. I don’t know how much even echoing this advice all throughout the blogosphere will prevent spam, though. A few people have remarked that the main reason there’s so much spam is that spam works, and costs the people who employ such methods very little.
Still, it’s a solid post and all of us can use the reminder to some degree. Working on one’s blog is a bit too consuming at times.

I ended up seeing his name on another persons blog comment section with a comment that had more value than most spammers so I’m still not sure if he is some outsourced guy or not.
What I’m trying to say is, he smelled like spam but looked kind of real. Make sure you aren’t making get mistaken for spam if you actually are real.

Hi Craig,

A great set of commandments. I have been guilty of sometimes skim reading, being more concerned with rushing to the next blog, but I had started to slow down and read more throughly. Having read this piece I will certainly change my practice for the better.
Us newbies just want to rush everywhere and get it done by yesterday, but you are an example of how to get it done properly with no rushing around.
You remind me of the Cadbury’s caramel advert in the early 80′s, showing my age now!

Hi Sally,
As always, a great resource. I have been “oil-rig-hoping” today, and come across so many comments like you described. I think I was guilty in the beginning too, leaving “your site looks great” type posts. It is a great idea to leave feedback as to where you’ve surfed in from. I just saw that on the last blog I was on. (nothing like re-enforcement)

Sally: Great post. I like these commandments and you pointed out some really great information. When it comes to commenting, I think there really has to be sincerity. When people are genuinely interested in the post and make comments, you can really tell the difference. There is a certain sense of passion that comes through their comment and that is really how great conversations can happen in the blogosphere. Thanks so much for sharing the commandments. I thought you have some really good tips.

Hi Sally. What I would like to know is why some people persist with the single line comment when they should know how the blog author checks out where they’re from and who they are before approving it.
There, I included WHAT…WHY…WHEN…HOW…WHERE…WHO… in one sentence.

I particularly enjoyed the 5 commandments of blog hopping. Well said!
I have been pretty good at doing these things right from the beginning, and see “blog hopping” and commenting as being more about meeting new people and building relationships than about getting links and traffic. I have met some awesome people just by hanging out on different blogs.

Hi Sally,
Thank you for your recommendation to Jacinta’s [100 Blog Comments] Challenge.
Been having a great time since I got started.
And the [Five Commandments Of Blog Hopping] you wrote here comes in real handy and practical
The 5W ,1H on your 3rd commandment is really useful for us to spark some idea to leave valuable comment.
I think the 5th commandment [Thou Shalt Not Kiss The Blog Author’s A$$] are one we easily can missed as most people will never really want to offend anyone on purpose. Most feel that seating on the fence is safer and easier. It will take a bit more wisdom and tact to state your point for a meaningful conversation rather than stir up blunt heated argument for nothing.
Praise and thanks to you for your guidance, the blog hop goddess, Sally Neil!

The most annoying comments to me are those of people who are trying to create generic comments that would apply to everything, and are totally unrelated to your post so you know this person didn’t spend a second even reading your title.
There is this guy who comments every few days on my blog: “Thanks for the information. Your post has really helped me with my homework assignment.” He even put it on my post in which I announced my change of theme for the blog. Was this new theme helpful to his homework assignment?

What pi*ses me off is the ‘Great Post’ and that’s it! I mean WTF is there any point to this process. Keep your 8 key strokes and go pester someone else.
You have to think what is blogging about? It’s about community interaction and debate between fellow bloggers. Sometimes you find there is more information to be found in the comments sections than the actual post. Problems can be solves and relationships can be built from adding good comments.
Great post Sally!
PS – Was only joking about the previous comment

Hey Daniel,
Yes the great post just lacks imagination and gives the blog author no feedback whatsoever complete waste of time really.
Your very right, it’s all about interaction, and build a little micro community on your blog, make people feel at home when they visit.
I must admit, I have visited some blogs where the post has been quite poor and I really have not know what to leave as a comment, tend to try and give some gentle pointers on how they could make their posts better in the future.

Hi Sally,
“Great stuff, nice blog thanks. Please visit my Cheap Computer Supplies! Bye!”
Ok, ok I am just joking Sally
Here is my REAL comment..
Well definitely I don’t think there are people called “Ultimate Twitter Guide”, “Cheap Computer Supplies” etc!
Earning something from leaving a comment is getting even harder because most bloggers don’t approve comments with “unusual” names any more! Also a blog comment has no real value for the search engines. Now don’t me wrong. Every backlink counts BUT it doesn’t have too much value as it used to be.
KeywordLuv is an excellent plugin that an internet marketer can use if he wants their visitors to leave a comment but also give a backlink (even if it doesn’t worth your time for reading the blog post and for writing the comment) to the commenter without looking spammy. Actually it helps you gain both credibility and a backlink!
I’ve joined the 100 Blog Comments Challenge for the experience and for the connection that I can make with other marketers and NOT for getting 100 backlinks to my blog!
If you read my other comments (100 Blog Comments Challenge) AND my replies to the comments on my own blog you will see that I’m trying to add as more value as I can, so that I can build the appropriate connection with the marketer and the reader.
The real value of a blog comment nowadays is that other visitors can read your comment and therefore visit your website to find out more about you and information from you.
Would you trust someone’s opinion, if his name was “Cheap Computer Supplies”? I wouldn’t!
“Ok. Now go and buy my Cheap Computer Supplies. Ok just joking..!!! (again).”
Have an excellent day Sally!
I hope you met lots of internet marketers and started building a good relationship.
A good connection will always worth more than a non-value blog comment!

I am going to try to avoid breaking the 5 commandment of blog hopping
If everyone would follow this rule it would be great, the quality of the comments in the blogosphere would most certainty rise and reading comments would become so much more interesting, which would of course draw more readers and also more visitors for each of the contributors.
Thanks for sharing this article and I have stumbled it so that more people might see it. (did I break the 5th commandment now?)

Hi Sally,
2 observations
1. You have started using more pictures than you use to and it really makes the blog interesting, though the content is kool as well
2. How nicely you have shared love .. i.e. you mentioned Bailey, Darren, in your post and its so subtle and within the flow ..
and these observations hold true for most of your posts.
The list of questions are very helpful, definitely it would help me …
One more things I’d like to add – not sure if people have different views about it though – is that when you are writing comments dont try and stay with the theme of the blog topic or comments .. write what comes to your mind, this is where we kick-off discussions and this is where we, as a bloggers group, come up with ideas and get an opportunity to do some brainstorming …
Take care ..
Cheers!
Abizer
P.S. Oh, are you attending the the internetmillionaire summit .. would be nice to meet you and our fellow students & bloggers.
Twitter: sallyneill
says:
Hey Abizer,
Yes using pictures in blog posts is great for 2 reasons, like you said it makes the post more interesting and breaks it up a little and the other reason is SEO, if you name your image with relevant keywords and do the same in the al text it lets the search engine spiders understand better what the imnages are too, all adds to the relevancy of your post content.
And yes, very true, think out the box and try to make your comment unique in some way,

Hi Sally,
I’ve arrived here through the 100 Blog comment challenge, I’ve also just started Alex Jeffreys new coaching program so I’ve spotted mention of you in the forum and seen your comments all over the place.
I’m new to blogging so let me appologise in advance for breaking a few of the rules ie rule No 3 I’m a newbie so not really sure if my comments are c**p or not,( you can tell me be honest, I can take it)from the quality of the other comments they probably are, I can only promise to get better with time.
I’ve only just started blog hopping and leaving comments due to the challenge, it’s taking me forever because not only do I read the posts I read all the comments aswell and I’m learning so much and loving it (I’ve got reams of notes already)which brings me on to rule No 5 I really have enjoyed and found value in every blog within the challenge that I have visited so far – (Although I’m not going to say how much I enjoy your say it as it is approach just in case I break the rule again, so scratch that sentence. LOL)
The big takeaway for me on this post is rule No 2 I’m that green it never even crossed my mind that someone would try spamming my blog and if they did I thought they would automatically go into the spam comments just like magic (how dumb am I?) I’ve had a couple of one line comments come through from the same person and I just approved them and replied thinking everything is good DOH.
Thanks to your post I’m going to go and checkout the commentor and delete the comments if they prove to be dodgy and in future I will be checking comments before approval so thanks.
Sorry if this is a c**p kiss a** comment but for me it really is a great post and probably the longest comment I’ve left upto now.
Enjoy the challenge

Dont worry about leaving a crap comment, I dont think you will have a problem judging by this one you left, it’s obvious you put thought into your response and thats always great, it’s just the one liner comments that bug me thats all.
Practice makes perfect the more you blog hop the better you shall get,

Wow Sally, you’re awesome! It’s great to meet you. Your article comes at the best possible time. Your 5 commandments are golden. I agree with each one. I especially like to write comments that are as relevant as possible to the author’s post. I also like to read and comment on articles that are written in the inclusive voice, conversational style. Authors who ask the right questions often receive the best comments. Be well, and good luck in the challenge ahead, Steve D.

I had no idea this little, hang on BIG challenge of mine was going to be such a work load. Hubby and bubba think my butt is glued to my chair and my fingers are glued to the keyboard.
All I can hope for now is that everyone eventually gets around to everyone’s blogs so we all succeed together. Although me thinks we might just miss the deadline a little bit…….:P
Now for your article. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. So does that sound too sucky or what!
Seriously your article is a good one and I do believe every new blogger should read it! I always double check people that make comments on my blog before I approve them, truthfully I delete more than I approve. I really like the spammy ones telling me how my blog has helped them with their college assignment! ?????? OK I really believe that one!
Had better get back to the blog hopping in my sleep. I need more coffee!!!
How’s your arm? I still get giggles thinking of you playing Wii!
Cheers

Hi Sally,
Thank you for your timely reminder on blogging etiquette. I am a first time visitor to your blog by way of the 100 comment challenge.
I have always found that if you can be well mannered and constructive when making your comments you will soon build lasting relationships.
Very nice to meet you Sally and I shall be back to your blog soon for more of your excellent information and tips.

Yes a good comment will do wonders for relationship building, that’s mostly how I have built up a lot of my relationships online, blogging is just a great way to connect with like minded people.
Nice to meet you too Brian, will be sure to check out your blog too,
Sally
Hi Sally, thanks for the eyeopener about blog hopping and reminding us all about the right way to comment.
I’d like to add, I get a lot of comments that go to the spam folder on my blog that make absolutely no sense to what my blog post is all about. I’m sure you got those yourself.
Mostly everyone is trying to advertise something, it’s really crazy. Some will also kiss your A$$ and tell you how good you and your post are when you know they didn’t read it.
A good Idea is there should be a website that lists all these comments for infamous publicity. Food for thought.

Sorry I am just getting round to responding to all my comments after a hectic few months!
Yes I get a ton of spam comments, and they seem to be getting more clever, sometimes I am not 100% sure if it is a spam comment or not anymore!
Perhaps I need some sort of action before a comment can be submited to stop those bot submissions.

Hey Sally. This stuff feels so common sense, but I’m continually amazed by how many people throw all 5 “commandments” out the window. “Spray and pray” style.
Do you think these 5 tenets could be summarized with the Golden Rule? I keep finding that all lists of rules, suggestions, commandments, etc. can be consolidated that way.
Are you familiar with Johnny B Truant? He uses a simple phrase to summarize a non jerky online presence: “just show up and be cool”. How flippin elegant & concise is that?

Hi Sally
Is it just co-incidence that so many blog hoppers have parents who have given them really weird names like “swiss replica watches”, “weight loss tips” and “coral calcium side effects”? lol.
If only everyone who leaves comments on blogs would abide by your commandments, the blogosphere would be a better place!
Great post, Sally.

Really love your commandments #3 and 4. #3 – is a great way to come up with ideas when you have writers blog…about commenting. #4 is just a great tip. It’s much better than using analytics to find out where your visitors come from. I notice some people do tell me (unless I already know who they are). I’m going to somehow “suggest” that in my comment section and try to do it more often myself.!

I hate it when people take advantage and post their affiliate link or blog link in the comment section to get more links to their sites – isn’t one enough.

Hi Sally,
I must say, this is a very important post to me since I just started my own blog and I am so happy to know you through Jason Ser and Jacinta.
After the read, I throw some questions to Jason, so we had a keen discussion about the keywordluv which you’ve mentioned in the post. At first I was quite confused about the function of keyword luv, but then I started to realize the real value of the anchor text and keyword luv. Jason had been saying how awesome you are, and now I know why, because I really learn a lot more from your post about blogging.
Thanks for the sharing.

Hi Sally
I don’t think enough attention is spent on blogging etiquette in IM courses. As in your post most of it is common courtesy and could be covered in a 5 minute video or a two page article.
I am amazed at the number of people in the 100 comment challenge who don’t bother to reply to comments.

Hi Sally,
Your blog hopping points got me thinking about those who leave store or business names instead of a generic Jane or Jane; I never understood that one. If you take the time to comment why not add a way to get acknowledged.
I say that and then I look at my name ElizOF which is my first name and the initials of my last name (Elizabeth Obih-Frank) and I wonder… hmmm. Actually, it’s the shortest way my rather long full name is registered under commentluv
Anyway, well said pointers! Your 5 points are helpful even though the comment thing no longer bothers me; to each his own style of commenting. Stopped by on my 11th hour visit for the 100 comment challenge.

Hi Sally,
Your blog post was informative. I’m new to blogging. As if I didn’t have enough information to absorb already, now there is etiquette. Wow! Lol! I guess I never really thought about blog etiquette. I just figured everyone was pretty much in it to make money and may the best man or woman be profitable. Hmm.. Although I’m new to blogging I can’t say I totally agree with you on all of your points. As far as stealing traffic is concerned. I’m not sure how you can steal traffic. Value is value. I trust that everyone is intelligent enough to discern whether a blog is giving them the value they want. I feel if I’m doing my job as an effective writer or blogger then I don’t believe traffic can be stolen. I know there is a sea of information out there. I don’t expect my blog to be anyone’s only source of information. Also as far as keywords are concerned, why not use them? I know I have only been blogging 2 months but why would using keywords be a bad thing? Should there not be a win win? I’m a rookie so please correct me if I am wrong. When comments are left on your blog it makes your blog appear more active and the links left by others create traffic to their sites. Again, I understand I’m considered a rookie however, knowing this information just pushes me to be sure that I am offering good content when I am blogging therefore I won’t ever feel as though anyone is stealing traffic.
Much Success,

Hi Lorna,
Hows your blog coming along then, a few months down the line now so you should be a bit of an expert from the newbie you were when you left this comment.
I was only suggesting that you dont use keywords as your name, this is just plain spammy, I think you should always use your real name, just my personal opinion.
And the traffic stealing I assume you mean adding additional links inside a comment, if a blog owner is already giving you a link to your twitter, your domain, your blog and your last blog post, then surely that’s enough, no need to add your link again in your comment which does steal traffic in my opinion.
Good luck with your blog, Sally
Hey Sally:
I just read the commandments so I better be careful.
About your post
I agree with # 1 100%
The comment should be about the post you are writing for.
I hope my comment is not crapp by your commandments.
# 3 credit the source all the time. I do not think it is a must. If some one did it is okay.
# 5 I wrote # 3 because I wanted to follow the 5th commandment.
Now I guess I can not ask about my post that has this new opportunity news for all bloggers.

Hi Sally,
it is about time someone wrote about this. I for one am really fed up with going through my comments and seeing ”great blog thanks” then 3 links to all their sales pages – they go straight into the spam box for me!
As bloggers we love to see real comments from real people who have taken the time to read our posts and give us some real honest and valuable feedback whether it be good or bad. Sometime I love it when someone else shares a difference of opinion with me on my blog as it can lead to a real good old fasioned debate and this can increase the comments and the interest in that partciular post.
Thanks for sharing the commandements Sally I shall try my very best to abide by them

Hi Sally,
Hopped right over from your “learn with Sally’ post to this one, and no, I am not a spammer (you might however see me as a stalker in the coming weeks, as I plan to spend alot of time on your blog. Teehee!), just super eager to start moving in the direction of that new chapter you have so enticed me with in your ‘Newbies next chapter’ ebook (downloaded from Warrior forum- thanks again!).
The commandments above are so simple they should actually be common sense but sadly are not. Funny how many need a guide for basic things. Thank-you for taking the time to put this on paper in such a ‘neutral’ way as these often unspoken rules can lead to alot of resistance. Fun and quirky post- perfect way to convey a crucial message.
In my humble opinion the rules you have highlighted above boil down to basic courtesy and consideration of others. Just sad that some feel a sense of entitlement and cannot see the sun shine over others.
If we all questioned ourselves: ‘how can I do for others’ before asking ‘how can I do for myself’, the world would indeed be a happier place as ‘paying it forward’ certainly has far more benefits than ‘keeping it all for myself’.(I guess one can only pray for an ideal world)
I personally open my blog comments with great anticipation and am always greatly dissapointed when I receive a comment like: ‘love your site, will be back’ without any reference to the post they are commenting on. I know it probably sounds cold but if I can see no indication from someones comment that they have taken the time to read my post, especially when the comment is unrelated and contains a link(s), I have started deleting these posts as I do not feel that they add value for anyone else.
I like to visit others blogs in my niche as it provides a never ending source of fresh ideas which I have not thought of myself and also inspiration to continually mature in my own online endeavours. There is so much to learn online and I believe that blogs are one of the best places to find inspiration and information.
When commenting on others blog posts, I always ask myself: ‘Would I like to receive a comment like this if I had posted this blog post?’
I also try and focus on being honest, sincere, and actually take the time to read and absorb the content that others are putting out there before commenting. I also do not comment just for the sake of commenting, if I feel like I cannot add value or disagree in a civilised way, I rather move on without commenting. I have found many gems by simply doing this.
I will however definately make an effort in future to credit my source as I admittedly do not often do this.
So refreshing to find relevant and useful information on blogs. Thanks again for a stunning post.
